Chernoff Faces

Herman Chernoff’s paper from 1973 proposed simplified face shapes to represent a number of variables in a data set, allowing the user to visually cluster the data by mapping numbers to the size and curvature of the face, position of the eyes, length of the nose, position of the mouth, etc. Despite being able to condense a lot of information into one single ideogram, their use remained very restrained, particularly in scientific fields.
